It was designed for the U.S. Navy as the AN/PDR-32 (XN-3). It was a rugged, miniaturized portable unit for measuring radiation from 0.005-500 R/h. It used two Geiger tubes to cover the wide range. Each tube has an opening and a thin window to permit the measurement of betas. The instrument has a shutter screen for the beta window. It uses two 1.5 volt batteries to provide 645-705 volts. It has a logrithmic scale. The unit is L shaped and has a belt clip and when clipped on the belt, the meter face is easy to view.
