Stowers and Son
Stowers and Son of 804 Grand Street, Kansas City, Missouri, developed the “Spotter” as a self-assembly kit The kit could be put together in one hour. All holes were pre-drilled and no special tools required. It included a free radioactive sample. It sold for $17.50 in 1955. It was sold completely assembled for $25. It had a GM tube in a 6.5” x 3.5” x 2” metal case and weighed 1.75 lbs. It claimed a battery life of 100 hours based on 4 hour per day use. The unit required one 22.5 volt battery and one flashlight battery. The unit came with batteries, headset, instructions, Geigerscope and uranium ore sample. It could be operated by depressing the high voltage switch and then listening for loud background clicks in the earphones. The average background count rate was 30-40 cpm. An optional probe with a beta window is available with a 5’ cable. It sold for $35 in 1955.
