The Model SM-3A Cutie Pie was introduced in 1952. It was a portable scintillation counter with a 1”x1” NaI(Tl) crystal. The scale was 0.05, 0.5 and 5 mR/h. It has two time constant settings – 1 sec and 10 sec. The unit was 6” x 3” x 12” and weighs 7 lbs.

The SM-3A Cutie Pie was introduced in 1952 as a scintillation survey meter. It was deigned for use in geological surveys, civilian defence, and medical tracer studies. It was developed by NRC for the AEC (Catalog No. SBX-5) and provide excellent sensitivity and stability. The range was 0.05, 0.5, and 5 mR/h. It had a choice of 1 or 10 seconds time constant. Battery life was 200 hours. The unit was 3.75” wide, 6” long and 12” high and weighed 7.5 lbs. The cost was $500 in 1952.

The Model SM-3A was also sold by The Radiac Company as the Scintillacounter Model DS-911. It was adverstised to be useful for geophysical exploration from low flying helicopters or slow moving vehicles or by foot. It sold for $495.00 in 1953. It had ranges of 0.05, 0.5 and 5 mR/h. It used a thalium activated sodium iodide crystal. The unit was 6" x3-1/4" x 12" and weighed 7 lbs. 6 oz. It was grey hammertone for easy cleaning.

The Model SM-5A was offered in 1955 as a survey meter for $185. It was designed for military specifications but has applications in uranium prospecting. It is 4-3/4” x4-7/8” x 8-7/8” and weighs 6 lbs. It uses a probe with a sliding shield. It has three scales from 0.5, 5 and 50 mR/h. It comes complete with earphones, carrying strap, calibration source and instruction manual.
