JEB Instruments

JEB Instruments was located at 5060 Hollywood Blvd in Los Angeles, CA. The JEB Companion was a small, compact Geiger counter. Radioactivity was “indicated by an increasing number of loud clicks in the earphones as the source approached”. The unit was 3” x 3” x 5” and weighed 1.5 lbs. It measured beta and gamma rays. It used one flashlight battery and one 22.5 volt battery. It sold for $39.95 in 1955.

The JEB Supremeter was the “finest professional Geiger counter obtainable regardless of price”. It had three ranges from 0.2, 2 and 20 mR/h. It used two 45 volt, one 22.5 volt and two flashlight cells. It was made of deep drawn aluminum and was moisture proof, fungus proof and tropicalized. It had three means of indicating radioactivity – earphones, flashing light and a 3.5” meter. It came with a radioactive sample. It sold for $149.50 in 1955.

The JEB Depth-Master was a borehole logging instrument for beta and gamma rays. It weighed 42 lbs. and is constructed of heavy gauge steel, ball bearings, level winding reel and footage indicator. It had three sensitivity ranges and a 4.5” meter. It sold for $795. It could be used for checking a cliff face from above, water well, crevasse, mine shaft, or other exploratory hole up to 500 feet deep.

The JEB Model Groundaire was introduced in 1955. It was advertised as “the most sensitive scintillation counter for its price in the world”. The JEB Special contained a 1" x 1" sodium iodide crystal. The JEB Groundaire Deluxe Model contained a 2-1/8” x 1-1/8” sodium iodide crystal scintillator detector. It could be used in aircraft or moving vehicles. It had two time constants, an external probe, and 3.5” meter. It was waterproof, tropicalized and shock mounted. It has 4 ranges from 0-20,000 cps and a indicator reading directly in percent uranium ore. It has controls for zero, calibration, time (fast and slow sample rate), and a multiplier switch for 1, x10, x100, x200, and zero. The unit was 8.75” x 4” x 6.75” and weighed 9.5 lbs. The smaller crystal unit sold for $249.50 and the larger crystal unit sold for $595, both complete with top grain cowhide carrying case.
